How do I fill out, complete, and submit my application?

You can create an application account and start completing your application by going to https://app.applyyourself.com/AYApplicantLogin/fl_ApplicantConnectLogin.asp?id=neu-grad.

We have included helpful information below on entering information into your application and submitting your application.

Completing the Program Information Section

Select “College of Engineering” in order to select graduate programs at the College of Engineering. You can then select the specific graduate engineering program to which you wish to apply. If applicable, you can then pick a concentration within the program.

If you are interested in an MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, you must select “Electrical and Computer Engineering” or “Electrical and Computer Engineering Leadership.” You can then select a concentration within the MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering program.

If you are interested in a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, you must select either “Electrical Engineering” or “Computer Engineering” respectively. You can then select PhD as your degree sought.

Some of our programs offer “track” options of completing a thesis or project; programs can also be completed on a “course-only” basis.” Select the track that best fits your needs and interests.

Engineering Management and Energy Systems applicants have to the opportunity to complete their degree entirely at our flagship Boston campus, at our regional campuses in Charlotte and Seattle, or entirely online. Students applying to these programs should express their selection in the “campus preference” field.

Completing the Biographical Information Section

If possible, the name you provide us should reflect your official (English) name as listed on government documents and academic records. If this is not possible, please enter your name so that it is as close to your official name as possible.

If you do not have an official first/given name, enter “FNU” as your first name (which stands for “First Name Unknown”). If you do not have an official last/family name, enter “LNU” as your last name. If either your first or last name is greater than 30 characters, please enter the first 30 characters.

Unless you have been prohibited or barred from entering or studying in the United States of America, please answer “yes” to the question that asks if you are legally authorized to enter the United States. Most international students answer "yes." U.S. citizens should answer "yes."

If you will need a student visa in order to study at Northeastern University, please answer “yes” to the question that asks if you will need assistance in securing/maintain authorization to study in the United States. Most international students answer "yes." U.S. citizens and permanent residents should answer "no."

Completing the Contact Information Section

If your postal code exceeds five digits, please enter the first five digits. Do not enter a state or province if you do not live in the United States or Canada.

Completing the Education Information Section

Although we already have information for many institutions across the globe in our system, there are sometimes institutions that we have not yet added to out list. If you cannot find your institution in our institution list on the "Education Information" page, please search for "Other" as the institution name and select "Other | Other" from the search results. After doing so, please enter the actual name of your institution in the "Other Institution Name" field.

If your transcript is already in English, simply upload an unofficial PDF copy/scan directly into our online application. If your transcript is in a language other than English, please provide an unofficial copy of your transcript in the original language and an English translation of your unofficial transcript (preferably translated by your institution). We do not need an evaluation service (e.g., WES) to evaluate your transcript.

When entering your GPA, please enter your overall grade in the "GPA" field and the scale in the "out of" field. For instance, if your overall grade is 75%, please enter "75" as your GPA and "100" in the out of field. Similarly, if your overall grade is an 18.7 on a 20-point scale, please enter "18.7" as your GPA and "20" in the out of field.

Completing the Test Results Section

Please enter the date you took the GRE or the date that you plan to take the GRE. We require a GRE score unless you graduated (or will graduate) from an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program at a university located in the United States (please note that Electrical and Computer Engineering applicants must submit a GRE score). Engineering Management applicants may submit the GMAT in lieu of the GRE. If you are not required to provide a GRE score, simply leave these fields blank.

If you have already taken an exam, please upload an unofficial score report; this can simply be a screenshot of your score from the GRE website. We will also need an official copy of your test score report. GRE test score reports should be sent directly from ETS to us at Institution Code 3665; you may select any department code you wish.

While we do need a GRE score in order to review your application, please do not worry if you have not yet taken the GRE. You can still submit your application without a GRE score! Once we receive an official GRE score report from ETS, we will automatically add it to your application. This policy also applied to TOEFL and IELTS scores.

Please note that a TOEFL or IELTS score is generally required unless you hold (or will hold) a degree from an accredited institution located in the United States of America, Canada (excluding Quebec), United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand.

Completing the Employment Experience Section

Provide basic information about your three most relevant and/or recent work experiences. Work experience may include co-op and internship experiences.

Completing the Supplementary Section: Engineering

Your statement of purpose should identify your desired degree program/field of study, summarize your academic and professional background, and summarize your likely academic/career goals and plans after graduation. This is your opportunity to help our faculty to get to know you better. Generally, statements of purpose should not exceed one to two pages (350 to 750 words), but there is no strict maximum limit. You may upload your statement of purpose as a Word Document, PDF, or other common document format.

Resume or CV

Your resume or CV should be one to two pages and provide relevant history about your academic and professional background. You may upload your resume/CV as a Word Document, PDF, or other common document format.

Completing the Recommendations Section

Please provide contact information for at least two recommenders; you may provide contact information for additional recommenders if you wish. It is crucial that you enter correct email addresses, since we will email your recommenders to invite them to submit a letter of recommendation electronically.

You may submit your application before your letters of recommendation have been electronically submitted. You can also edit your recommenders list and their contact information after you submit your application (as long as the recommender has not yet submitted a letter of recommendation).

Application Fee Section and Certification

Before you can submit your application, you will need to submit the application fee. We accept major credit/debit cards, electronic funds transfer, and checks. After you provide payment information, you will be asked to electronically sign your application by typing in your full name.

Applying to Multiple Programs

You can apply to two (or more) graduate programs at Northeastern University and the College of Engineering simultaneously. In order to do so, you will need to create two separate application accounts (using different email addresses if necessary), complete and submit two separate application accounts, and pay two application fees. If possible, please provide upload relevant academic documents to both applications. Similarly, please provide your recommenders’ contact information for both applications.

You should only need to send your official test scores reports (such as GRE and TOEFL score reports) once to any graduate program at Northeastern University (before or after you submit an application).
