Last Updated: Aug 29, 2019 10:53AM EDT
Instructions and a timeline for the I-20 request process are provided below. This information is only relevant for international students who will need an F-1 student visa in order to study at Northeastern University.
I-20 Request Process: Instructions and Guidelines

1. Create and Submit Your I-20 Request
Log into myOGS using your myNEU username and password and create an I-20 request. It may take up to 24 hours after you confirm your enrollment before you are able to log into myOGS.
Please fill out all relevant fields in the request form, and make sure you enter a date into the "address valid until" field. If you will be relying on family funds, please make sure you specify the relationship of the family member to you in the relevant field in the request form.
Required Documents to Upload
A. Identity page of your Passport (high-resolution color scan) which includes your full name, date of birth, passport number/ID, and issuing country. Your passport must have valid expiration date (i.e., not expired)
B. Financial documents demonstrating at least $43,630 U.S.D. in financial support dated within nine (9) months of your date of entry to Northeastern.
*The above amount is for the BOSTON campus. The required financial support amount varies slightly for the regional campuses.
C. One or more letters of financial support if you are utilizing family funds (samples are provided within the myOGS system). Financial support may be documented by any of the following (or any combination thereof):
    * personal bank statements/letters
    * bank statements/letters of sponsors (relatives) who will financially support your education
    * student loan commitment letter from lender
    * government or agency scholarship/fellowship/funding award letter
    * Northeastern scholarship/fellowship/assistantship award letter
Timeline: The Graduate School of Engineering requires 10-15 business days to process and approve your request. You will receive an email once your request has received third-party approval. If you do not submit a complete and valid request, you will be notified via email and you will need to resubmit your request. It generally takes an additional 10 business days to process a resubmitted request, so it is important to provide us with all required documentation in your initial request. While GSE is processing your request, your myOGS status will state that your request needs "third-party approval."
2. Graduate School of Engineering: Third-Party Approval
After GSE reviews your complete and valid I-20 request, we will provide "third-party approval" for your request. If your request is incomplete or invalid, we will deny your request and you will need to resubmit your request (see #1 above). Your request is forwarded to OGS (Office of Global Services) for final review and approval. If OGS needs additional information, you will be notified via email.
Timeline: OGS requires 15-20 business days to process your I-20 request after your request receives third-party approval from the Graduate School of Engineering. While OGS is processing your request, your myOGS status will read "under review" or "pending."

3. OGS: Final Review and Approval
OGS gives final approval to your request and generates your I-20. You will receive an email once your request has received final approval from OGS. You will also be able to log into myOGS and see your SEVIS ID. You can use your SEVIS ID to schedule a visa appointment with a U.S. embassy/consulate/diplomatic mission.
Timeline: You should receive your I-20 (or your I-20 will be available for pick-up, if you elected to pick up your I-20) within 5-10 business days after your I-20 request receives final OGS approval. Shipments usually arrive via DHL Express. We are not able to provide electronic or fax copies of your I-20. Your will receive your shipment tracking number via email once your I-20 has shipped.

Additional Information
Please note that the Graduate School of Engineering and OGS are process hundreds of I-20 requests each week. Inquiring about the status of your I-20 via phone or email will significantly delay processing of both your I-20 request and the I-20 requests of other students. Your patience is appreciated and assists us with processing and approving I-20 requests quickly and accurately.
In the past, the majority of our international students received their I-20s about 60 days before the start of the semester and were still able to schedule visa appointments, obtain an F-1 visa, and arrive at Northeastern for orientation without incident.
Timeline: In total, it takes about 30 to 45 business days after you submit your I-20 request to receive your I-20. You can the check the real-time status of your I-20 request at any time at myOGS.
